Joe Quesada talks about Mad! on Ultimates 3

The weekly Joe Friday's Question and Answer over at Newsarama had a question about Joe's progress on the upcoming Ultimates 3 run.

NEWSARAMA: Like his former Cliffhanger mate - Joe Madureira– - before him, Jeff Campbell obviously brings also questions regarding his “pace”. First of all, how are things going with Madureira? Here is your opportunity to align expectations with how many Loeb/Mad issues of Ultimates 3 readers are likely to see, and how often when the book launches later this summer (is that right?)

Joe Quesada: Actually, what just occurred to me is that we now have all three Cliffhanger boys working at Marvel, Ramos, Madureira, and Campbell.

Joe is doing well on his schedule so far, all fingers are crossed, but itÂ’s still a little early to make predictions as to scheduling and absolute ship dates. What I can tell you is that the work is just unbelievable! Mad has grown so far beyond the great artist he was already. And while the style of work is 180 degrees from what Bryan Hitch does, itÂ’s just as detailed and intricate.

On a related note, don't you think it's weird how all the members of "Cliffhanger" (Joe Madureira, Jeff Scott Campbell, Humberto Ramos) are all back at Marvel now doing projects? I remember when they banded together and left Marvel to their thier own comic line, ah those were the good ol' days.

Hmmm. Campbell never left Marvel in the first place to do Cliffhanger. Not to my recollection anyway.

Yeah, Campbell worked on Gen13 (I forget which company published that.. Dark Horse?) and Ramos did work for DC I'm pretty sure.

It was in the early 90's when Mavrvel had a mass exidos with McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Leifeld, etc who left to start up Image.

Not that it matters really, it's just me nit picking.

Gen 13 was for Image.

that's right. only mad was at marvel to my recollection. he left uncanny to do Battle Chasers for Wildstorm: Cliffhanger. Ramos was at DC doing Impulse, then went on to do Crimson. Campbell, who was previously doing Gen13 for Wildstorm (Image) moved to Danger Girl.

Art Advice 2.0 from Joe Madureira

Joe Madureira has continued voicing his art advice with details on what gear he uses, his influences, and skills needed for working in the game or comic industry. Art Advice 2.0 Now for the specific art questions I do get very often:   1-I use a technical pencil with HB lead 99% of the time. Staedler, Koo-in-oor, Prismacolor Turquoise, it’s all good. Take your pick. I use them all. Sometimes I work on paper that’s a little different ( smoother or more coarse ) and I may move up or down to an H or a B lead if needed. But I find H and 2H digs into the pap er and is too hard to erase ( Which sadly I do a lot of ) and B is too soft ( smudges like a mofo.) B is fantastic for going back over lines, darkening , and adding weight to your lines. Basically, ‘inking’ with a pencil. **Just keep a sheet of scrap paper under your hand or you will smudge the shit out of your drawing!!!** HB suits my needs 99% of the time. Really no need to switch it out, just adjust your pressure. Harder or...
